What are the gifts? Are all of those gifts available to us? Or just some of them? Who gives us the gifts? TODAY Who receives the gifts? TODAY Unaware of Spiritual Gifts The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are crucial to the LIFE of the church The church is not a human institution The church is a supernatural institution Church life should be about life and breath and joy and power (supernatural) The Problem with the Corinthian Church Somehow, they had forgotten these truths about the supernatural part They could only handle milk though I Cor 3:3 still carnal (fleshly) and it showed in their behavior in the church All of this because they had forgotten this was a supernatural holy spirit led gathering of people and they were to live and act like it Paul’s concern Spiritual gifts – Pneumatikos - the word emphasises the source as the Holy Spirit The initiating source of the gifts is the Holy Spirit Unaware - Ignorant To be unaware is to lack knowledge, information, data, truth – thus understanding These gifts under the influence of the Holy Spirit are needed for the LIFE of the church When we are IGNORANT - The church cannot mature SPIRITUALLY There are counterfeits out there Satan will fake it Your flesh will fake it The Giver of the Gifts Various kinds of Gifts – Holy Spirit I Cor 12-14 Grace gifts – not earned but received Spiritual gifts are given by the Spirit at salvation Varieties of Ministries (serving) – Jesus Eph 4 Serving or ministry – useful in the life of the church Jesus (Lord) is the example of serving ! Variety of effects – God Rom 12 The effects come from divine power Effects describe the supernatural work of God in the life of the believer who is being built up We cannot operate the gifts in out own power – they must be used in the effective power of the Spirit The Divine power comes from the Father Origin Words Given 12:7 Distributed 12:11 The Getter of gifts Who then receives the gifts? Might be surprised! Each one 12:7, 11 Those who have been saved Call Jesus Lord and mean it with their life Every member of the Body of Christ That is YOU! Practical To not find out what our gift is, to not exercise it of choose to ignore it is to GRIEVE the Spirit, QUENCH his work in your life and the life of the church!!

The Spirit’s work at salvation: Titus 3:5 The washing of regeneration - The Renewal of the soul The Spirit’s work in the world John 16:7-11 Convict (expose)- His purpose is not to CONDEMN but to CONVERT The Holy Spirit is a Person of the holy trinity Acts 5:1-7 He is not a force, a power, an it or an experience He is a Personality with a will, intellect and He has emotions The Holy Spirit is the Helper – The Come Along Side One John 14:15-18 So Jesus sent us His Holy Spirit who empowers us to live in victory The Helper will be your Teacher John 14:25, 26; I Corinthians 2:6-15 Teach and He Reveals – to take the cover off The ministry of the Holy Spirit in Witness John 15:26,27 Testify of Me Spirit of Truth John 16:13 Truth – that which is not concealed - God is ABSOLUTE TRUTH The Holy Spirt as our Guide Guide is a teacher, conductor who shows the way Guides us into the proper use of the Gifts of the Spirit The Holy Spirit and You What is the MARKED difference between what we do and what the early church did? There was a consistent dependence on the Holy Spirit We are called to be FILLED with the Spirit Ephesians 5:18 Under His Control It is not for the elite only the surrendered Something EVERY Christian should pursue DAILY Two we are not to do in our relationship with the Holy Spirit Do not QUENCH the Spirit Do not GRIEVE the Spirit You were SEALED by the Spirit Eph 1:13, 14 YOU ARE HIS!! HE HAS IMPRINTED HIS AUTHENTIC OWNERSHIP ON YOU AS A PURCHASED POSSESSION Gifts of the Father Romans 12:1-8 These are operational gifts – or gifts of activities 1. Prophecy 2. Gift of ministry (serving) 3. Gift of teaching 4. Gift of Exhortation 5. Gift of giving 6. Gift of leadership 7. Gift of mercy Gifts of the Holy Spirit I Corinthians 12:1-10 These are given as desired by the Holy Spirit to accomplish the purpose of God especially in the church 1. Word (utterance) of wisdom 2. Word of knowledge 3. Gift of faith 4. GIFTS of HEALINGS (plural and plural) 5. Working of miracles 6. Prophecy 7. Discerning of spirits 8. Tongues or languages 9. Interpretation of tongues Gifts of Jesus Ephesians 4:7-12 These are gifts of Jesus given to those who are called 1. Apostles 2. Prophets 3. Evangelists 4. Pastor 5. Teacher The agreement Most theologians will believe there are gifts of the Holy Spirit There is agreement that most of the gifts are for today We mostly agree on how and why they are to operate We mostly agree on who has them or receives them The disagreement The disagreement enters around what are labeled as the SIGN GIFTS Gifts of Healings Working of miracles Gift of tongues Gift of interpretation The Controversy – Are the Gifts available for today? CESSATIONIST - They do not believe that the sign gifts are active for today The Scriptural and historical stand of the Cessationist 1. Acts seems to present the idea that the signs/wonders were for the apostles and their close associates – they were unique to the apostles - Acts 2:43; Acts 14:3; Acts 15:12 2. II Corinthians 12:12 – the signs of an apostle – signs and wonders 3. Hebrews 2:3, 4 – those who heard Him…bearing witness by signs and wonders 4. Matthew 10:1-8 – the twelve were given power heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons 5. I Corinthians 13:8-10 - Ceasing starts when the perfect (canon of scripture) or complete has come 6. Church History – they claim that these kinds of sign gifts have appeared in no one particular group CONTINUATIONALIST - believe the gifts are ALL active and available for today The Biblical defense for the Continuationalist 1. 1 Corinthians 12-14 - gifts were operating in the normal body of believers 2. Luke 9:1,2; 10:1-9, 17– Jesus transfers a continuation of His kind of ministry and gives it to the 12 plus the 70 3. Matt 24:14; Mark 16:15-18 – preaching and signs 4. It was the apostles plus deacons that performed miracles - Acts 6:8; Acts 8:4-8; Barnabas 5. Galatians 3:5 Not only to an apostle but TO YOU done among YOU 6. 1 Corinthians 12:28 - It would seem that healings and miracles are distinguished from apostle Appointed prophets, apostles, teachers – offices Conclusion - The apostles were unique - Eph 2:20; Matt 16:18; 1 Cor 3:10, 11 There is enough evidence that says that we need to be open to the idea that in the days in which we live may be a time where God desires to work in the church, in the establishment of your faith, and to move among the lost in a similar way, utilizing all of the gifts of the Spirit at His will and disposal. Practical I will encourage you to seek God, commune with the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus and while doing so seek the best gifts as commanded by Paul and pursue all in LOVE.

Put in the work in and having faith will make it a reality 5:8 Marriage is a covenant that COST – don’t run! Dig in and do the work! Fight with God’s strength God will not just save your marriage! The Dying (Brokenness) Principle John 12:20-26 The path to being made well STARTS HERE – learning to be broken, learning to consistently die to yourself II Cor 4:10-18 To be broken is the beginning of revival - This is a painful process – but it is necessary Daily dying reveals Jesus is us Refusing to die to self will make your marriage miserable NOT the act of dying! - More death = more life Motivation for Brokenness must be that the life and power of Jesus will shine through! The Servant Principle Philippians 2:1-11 In a life committed to dying to self we will learn more and more to put our spouse above ourselves This becomes the marks of a servant! The Theology of Marriage Genesis 1:27, 28; 2:18-25 Marriage Comes From God 1 – Comes from God by design in creation 2 – By Bringing her to Him Gen 2:22 3 – By the Word of His own mouth Gen 2:24 4 – By Joining the two into one Matt 19:6 Roles In the Marriage Genesis 1:26,27; Gen 2:7,8; 2:15-24 The Man God gave the man specifically these instruction sand roles before the woman was made 1. Initiator of the relationship – Primary role of leadership 2. Primary role as the Provider for the relationship 3. Primary role as the Protector of the relationship 4. Primary role as the Moral guardian of the relationship The Woman 1. The Second Half of the one - God said it is not good to be alone 2. Helper suitable Ezer – great power to help Kenegdo – suitable – comparable Everything a man is not the woman is – she completes the whole After the Fall The enemy attacked the order of God in the marriage Gen 3:16 is not a formula for marriage – It is a CURSE From that moment on there is a DISHARMONY – a fight for the control So now we look to the power of the Gospel to bring us back to a Garden Place in marriage The Grace Principle Colossians 3:12-17 Bearing with (forbearing); forgiving to put up with, to endure, holding back from one another “Even as Christ forgave you, so you must do” The Priority Principle The bible does not give us a succinct list of the priorities in this life. But it doesn’t take much to figure it out as you look into God’s word and the examples we see in scripture. #1 Your God - Duet 6:5, Matt 6:33 #2 Your Marriage – Gen 2:24; Eph 5:22-33 #3 Your Children – Duet 6:7 - DON’T BE A CHILD CENTRIC MARRIAGE #4 Church – Heb 10:25 #5 Your Work – provide for the family The Heart Principle Ephesians 5:21-33 Your marriage is a parable of Christ and the Church To live out the heart principle will mean we must let the gospel do it work in us Women are to be a submissive (honoring the role of the husband), respectful helper – use your power to help your husband fulfill his purpose from God Men are to love as Christ loved, cherish and nourish her as if presenting her to God Practice Principle I Peter 3:1-7 Women live in submission by practicing a quiet and gentle spirit nagging and banter do not achieve this Men are to live with their wives with understanding and honor them Earn a PhD of your wife The Gravity Principle Matthew 19:1-12; Mark 10:1-12; I Corinthians 7 God intended from the beginning that marriage is to be for life Divorce was given because of the hardness of our hearts When there is the tearing apart of the one flesh union – covenant- there will always be life long consequences The Warfare Principle I Peter 5:5-9; Eph 6:10-18 You are in a battel for your marriage because you have a real enemy who is out to destroy you We must resist him – he will flee Fight in the strength of God and with the provided fighting equipment.

Donny Coulter Speaking Dana, Mia and Tiffany singing The Warfare Principle I Peter 5:5-11 I Peter 5:5-11 Your Adversary - He is Real and He is Active o Roaring Lion o Seeks to devour Your adversary and marriage - Satan enters the picture AFTER the first marriage o Disturbs the order of God – brings division in the marriage - Consequences of Sin on Marriage o Polygamy, Homosexuality, Divorce, Unfaithfulness, Bestiality – AND ON AND ON IT GOES - Direct influence of Satan on Marriage in the Bible o Genesis 6:1-4 sons of God and daughters of man • These unnatural marriages bring societal mayhem on the earth o Marriages with idol worshipers • Intermarriage was forbidden by God because it would cause God’s people to abandon Him - It brings the wrath of God • Instances - Numbers 25, I Kings 11, Ezra 9, 10; Neh 13 • Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers – 2 Cor 6:14 o Marriages that are used against the purpose of God • Acts 5:1-11 Satan influenced their heart to lie o Celibacy within marriage – 1 Cor 7:1-5 • This was used as a doctrine of demons in Corinth • The lie - Celibacy makes you spiritual • It opens the man and woman up to direct influence from Satan • Brings scorn when it happens - 2 Sam 12 o Marriage being forbidden – I Timothy 4:1-3 • Singleness is the path to salvation • Doctrine of demons Your Path to Victory - Humble yourself under the MIGHTY HAND of God o Humble – back off the control button o Mighty hand of God • God has the power to lift you from the your low place • His power and not ours • Key in winning against the adversary! - Casting all your anxiety (care) upon - Be sober – self control - Be vigilant - watchful - Resist steadfast in the faith (James 4:7) - Armor of God o Belt of truth • God’s word is the only source of truth – not reason, tradition or good ideas • Relationship must be truthful with each other o Breastplate of Righteousness • The righteousness of Christ covers the sinner and demands then righteous living • IT is seen in the practice of the principles we have been taught o Shoes covered with the Gospel of Peace • We have peace with God through the Gospel • We have peace with one another through the same • Disagreements are a normal part of being two humans but we must not allow these to fester and cause anger, bitterness and unforgiveness – all things Satan loves! o Shield of Faith • Objective – based on doctrine/theology • Satan loves false doctrine (be careful of your doctrine!) • This kind of faith is your protection against the lies • Subjective faith • We will all hit low times • Here our faith must bring us to know that Jesus has us! o Helmet of Salvation • Salvation is the basis for all things God • Salvation means sin is no longer the master • Salvation means our ultimate satisfaction is in Christ • Salvation brings hope o The sword of the Word • When Satan comes to wreak havoc - our call is to use the Word of God as the defensive weapon against His scheme • This requires us to know the Word • Requires discussion and battle plans together • Center your defenses on the Word • Not on tradition, reason, science, conferences
