Pastor Donny Coulter Dana on music Marriage God’s Way Created by God Male and Female 4/26/26 A simple reading of the text first – with no gymnastics with theology – devoid of all abuses and feelings because of the abuses - seems to point to a beautiful design and plan of God that centers around the complimentary understanding of men and women. 1 Peter 3:7 Context 1 Peter 2:9-3:7 3:7 – how to live honorably with your wife who is called to submission Joint heirs – heirs together of the grace of life Grace - Unmerited favor – Neither male nor female earn this GRACE! Therefore, we are equally undeserving and equally receive this grace of life from God The overarching question then becomes - WHY? God Created them male and female in His Image Genesis 1:26-27 1. God Created mankind He did so for His Glory Isiah 43:7 Every human being has the potential to fulfill this purpose How is this possible? Only through the salvation of Jesus Christ 2. God created us in His Image Gen 1:27 so God created mankind in His own image Created with a physical body AND immaterial spirit/soul This soul/spirit sets us apart no animals, plants bear this image in this way This allows mankind the opportunity to LONG FOR and COMMUNE with His Maker All of us – sinner or saint – are made to “resemble” God James 3:9; Genesis 9:6 This means that ALL of mankind bears the image of God along with bearing the scars of SIN Sin has so damaged the image we bear What’s the answer? Better who is the answer? Eph 4:20-24 3. Created Male and Female Gen 1:27 The creation of male and female provides the physical, emotional and spiritual framework for marriage Creation of male and female in the image of God establishes these indisputable truths 1. Equality Equality is not defined by society, by roles or responsibilities Equality is defined by God in creation 2. Equality in personhood the state of being a person – a personal identity, distinctive from others 3. Equal in Dignity – our inherent worth or value the value of both men and women is not determined by outside agents, circumstances, our role in the marriage or in the church or in society It is determined by God 4. It implies complementarity God made us equal in personhood and dignity but he also made us different It is only through these differences that we have the opportunity for marriage and relationship Physical compliment, emotional compliment, spiritual complement PRACTICAL God created us! To be in relationship and to bring Him glory That cant happen outside of Jesus Christ God created us in His image We as sinful man, have completely destroyed the beauty of the image Even unredeemed mankind has been created with the image of God as unrecognizable as it is Only Christ can restore the way it is supposed to be God created us male and female Equality, worth and value are defined by creation in the beginning And they are confirmed in the cross The cross defines God’s assigned value for you - both male and female! If you ever doubt your worth and value Look at your life – no matter the circumstance, position, role or responsibility in the backdrop of the cross! We need the cross and Jesus’ reformation to restore this! MEN – see your wife as equal and worthy – celebrate her worth WOMEN – see your husband as equal and worthy – celebrate his worth! If we don’t get this right then the rest is unattainable
