Acts seems to present the idea that the signs/wonders were for the close associates - Acts 2:43 ; Acts 14:3 ; Acts 15:12 2. 2 Corinthians 12:12 - the signs of an apostle - signs and wonders 3. Hebrews 2:3-4 4. Matthew 10:1-8 5. 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 that which is perfect refers to the canon of scripture - Ceasing starts when the perfect or complete has come - that which is perfect is the Holy Bible 6. Church History - they claim that these kinds of sign gifts have appeared in no one particular group and continued to heal like Jesus and the disciples. Ultimately, with the death of the apostles and the establishment of the Bible as the inherent Word of God the sign gifts ceased and are no longer active for the church today. The Biblical defense for the Continuationalist 1. 1 Corinthians 12-14 - Luke 9:1-2; 10:1-9, 17; Matthew 24:14; Mark 16:15-18; John 14:2 - Historically there are many stories of miraculous works being done among unreached people groups 2. It was the apostles plus deacons that performed miracles - Stephen in Acts 6:8; Phillip the evangelist Acts 8:4-8; Barnabas 3. Galatians 3:5 4. 1 Corinthians 12:28 5. 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 - We know in part - prophesy in part - FACE TO FACE - eternal state - Rapture; Second coming of Christ (millennium); New heaven and new earth - eternal state - 1 Cor 1:7 - Christ revealed Conclusion the apostles were unique and God used these foundation builders in a unique way and we must honour that Ephesians 2:20; Matt 16:18; 1 Cor 3:10-11 There is enough evidence that says that we need to be open to the idea that this day in which we live may be a time where God desires to work in the church, in the establishment of your faith, and to move among the lost in a similar way, utilizing all the gifts of the Spirit at His will and disposal.

Are there really gifts of the Spirit for believers today? Are all of the gifts available to us? Or just some of them? Who gives us the gifts? Who receives the gifts? Why does He give the gifts? What are they used for? How are we to exercise the gifts? Let’s look at the list of gifts listed for us in scripture first then work our way to answer some of these questions. I Cor 12:1-10 I Cor 12:28 Romans 12:1-8 I Peter 4:7-11 The agreement Most theologians will believe there are gifts of the Holy Spirit The disagreement The disagreement enters around what are labeled as the SIGN GIFTS One group is called CESSATIONIST The next group is called CONTINUATIONIST The Catch 22 – Both seem to be in scripture….

I am not suggesting a SUBSEQUENT work of the Spirit but a continuous work o It would seem there is no pattern to the baptism or filling 2. We need this TODAY o This seems to be a spiritual experience that many of us have missed… It is my conclusion it was Not just for the disciples/apostles o Interesting that we have made water baptism the necessity (it is) but baptism of the Spirit is optional (or non-existent) ** We have gotten so good at doing it all ourselves, we don’t even know that we are not operating in the power of the spirit ** - The go to of humanity and many of us Christians is o Self aggrandizing – o Self protection – - What does it look like to operate this way o Offenses o words of HARM and HURT 3. How to live in expectation of the baptism of the Holy Spirit o Acts 1:12-14 1. Obedience – go the city 2. Wait until He comes 3. Prayer  Give me the Holy Spirit’s baptism  Help me to know when the Promise comes  Help me glorify Jesus when He comes  Help me overcome my fears when He comes 4. Go to Jesus!
